Worship Resources: Worship
Scriptures
Psalm 95. Frequently and rightly used as a call to worship, this psalm also says much about the nature of worship. Worship includes dialogue between God and God’s people: God is a “great God” and we are invited to “bow down”; our covenant God draws “the people of his pasture” to himself and we are exhorted not to “harden our hearts.” In confidence that God both listens and speaks, we are invited to “sing for joy” and bring our “thanksgiving.”
Acts 2:42-47. The early, Spirit-filled church was marked by teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayer, praise, and giving. Worship is a picture of the church’s life (koinonia).
Hebrews 9:1-10:25. This text sets the discussion of worship in the context of covenant renewal. No one can make a worthy offering to God—except Jesus, the Son and high priest. We participate in Jesus’ offering. Christian worship, like the relationship we have with God, is totally grace-full!
Revelation 4-5. This passage paints as rich a picture of worship as you’re going to find. Our worship both anticipates heavenly worship and participates in it. Worship is to God the Father, “in the Spirit” (4:2), and centers on Jesus, “the Lamb who was slain” (5:12). We do it because of God's creation (4:11) and salvation (5:9-10). Finally, our worship is in concert with both seen and unseen participants.
