Worship Resources: Living in Community

Scriptures
Psalm 133. The unity of God's people is a gift as well as something for disciples to maintain. While the psalm’s images may need explaining, the gift of and call to unity are as relevant as always.

Acts 2:42-47. The early, Spirit-filled church was marked by teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayer, praise, and giving.

Romans 12:3-21. This exhortation, filled with quotable quotes, is immensely practical, especially given its location in the letter: after (“therefore” of v. 1) the proclamation of the saving gospel of Jesus Christ for Jews and Gentiles.

1 Corinthians 12:1-13:7. Like the Romans passage above, this passage provides practical advice on how to live in Christian community. The emphasis here is on unity in spite of divisions and spiritual gifts. Both this passage and the Romans one give primacy to love.

Galatians 3:26-29. The community of Jesus’ disciples—aka Abraham’s children—is rooted in faith and baptism, achieving oneness among diverse people.

1 Peter 2:4-12. God’s building project isn’t buildings but people. It is not static but dynamic, since people keep coming to Christ. Old Testament language radically deepens our understanding and experience of this reality.

Revelation 7:9-17. First John “heard” the fulfillment of God’s people (vv. 4-8). Then he “saw” the reality that God’s saints, beyond counting, are drawn from around the globe. Jesus’ disciples have been washed in blood and are assured of safety in the presence of the Lamb of God.
