Alternative Approach #1

Five Services Spaced Throughout the Year

Service 1: Follow Me

A. Scripture

Any of a number of texts in which Jesus calls disciples to “follow me.”

It is important for the congregation to grasp, at the beginning of this journey of discipleship, that making disciples—those who are committed to following Jesus—is the main task of the church. Making disciples is not only the mission of the church across the seas, or across town, but the vital work of the church in every congregation.

B. Service Planning

The suggestions will follow the classical structure of worship using six movements, Gathering, Confession, Word, Prayer, Sacrament, and Sending. These apply whether a congregation worships in a more “traditional” or more “contemporary” manner. Most of the suggestions for prayers, litanies and other words are from The Worship Sourcebook (TWS). Because of copyright permission issues, we are not able to reproduce them here. For each numbered suggestion below, the first number refers to the page, the second to the entry on that page.

Lord Jesus Christ,

Word
TWS 157.15
Q. But why are you called a Christian?
A. Because by faith I am a member of Christ
and so I share in his anointing.
      I am anointed
      to confess his name,
to present myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks,^4
to strive with a good conscience against sin and the devil
      in this life,
and afterward to reign with Christ
      over all creation
      for all eternity.
—from Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 32

The church is a gathering of forgiven sinners,
called to be holy, dedicated to service.
Saved by the patient grace of God, we deal patiently with others.
Knowing our own weaknesses and failures,
we bring good news to all sinners
with understanding of their condition, and with hope in God.
We grieve that the church, which shares one Spirit, one faith, one hope,
and spans all time, place, race, and language,
has become a broken communion in a broken world.
When we struggle for the purity of the church
and for the righteousness God demands,
we pray for saintly courage.
When our pride or blindness blocks
the unity of God’s household, we seek forgiveness.
We marvel that the Lord gathers the broken pieces
to do his work, and that he blesses us still
with joy, new members, and surprising evidences of unity.
We commit ourselves to seeking and expressing
the oneness of all who follow Jesus.

Service 3: Created

A. Scripture

The major theme of this service is that we have been created and recreated by God for his service as disciples of Jesus Christ. Since baptism is the sign and seal of this recreating work of God by his Holy Spirit, and baptism is so closely tied to Jesus’ Great Commission, this would be a good time to focus on the meaning of baptism in the lives of Christians.

B. Service Planning

The suggestions will follow the classical structure of worship, using six movements, Gathering, Confession, Word, Prayer, Sacrament, and Sending. These apply whether a congregation worships in a more “traditional” or more “contemporary” manner. Most of the suggestions for prayers, litanies and other words are from The Worship Sourcebook (TWS). Service 4: Crafted

A. Scripture

The major theme of this service is that disciples of Jesus Christ are uniquely crafted by God for service. While there are many ways in which we are crafted by God, from the way we’re wired in creation to the unique experiences of our lives, this is a good opportunity to focus on the general idea that God made us for his service. One text that wonderfully highlights that crafting is Ephesians 2:10. Others you might consider include the following:
