Follow Me: Session 5
"Follow Me"
In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. —Paul, to the church at Philippi, Philippians 1:4b-6
Digging Deeper:
-
The article “Reflecting God's Values” by Mistie Hutchison discusses what it means to live in a Christian community.
-
Read “A Place Called Community” by Parker J. Palmer. Palmer looks at the myths associated with community as well as the need for Christ to be at the center.
-
The life of Christian discipleship is a lifelong journey. In the article “Discipleship and Christian Formation” Leonard Vander Zee gives a brief summary of what is involved in this journey and its importance to the church’s mission.
-
Markers or milestones on our faith journey should be shared. Check out the Walk On Resource Book (which can be downloaded). Look at pages 21-23, which talk about ways to mark and celebrate these faith milestones together.
-
Option 3 (p. 39) in the Follow Me discussion guide refers to John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, available as an ebook.
-
Dallas Willard has written several books about spiritual discipleship. Check out his website. Read the article “How to Be a Disciple,” which defines discipleship and the cost of our commitment. The article “Living a Transformed Life Adequate to Our Calling” shows how a personal life is transformed by vision, intention, and means.
For Leaders:
-
Disciples travel best together. Who have some of your traveling partners been, and how have you helped one another on the journey? Have you learned from others in ways that caught you by surprise?
-
Being a disciple is a lifelong journey. Ask your group if there have been events that have pulled them off this journey. What do those events tell you about yourself and God?
-
Read the Scripture passages outlined for this session and have a study Bible handy when the group meets.
